Hurlburt Field in Florida has identified the airman who was found dead outside of a hospital early Monday morning as Senior Airman Luis Navajas.

Michele Nicholson, a spokeswoman for the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, said in an interview that Navajas died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His death is still under investigation, she said, but there is no indication of foul play.

“There is no greater loss than that of a valued airman and teammate,” Col. Sean Choquette, commander of the 505th Command and Control Wing, said in the Tuesday release. “The death of Airman Navajas affected us all, and our team is now focused on taking care of his family and each other as we grieve. We ask that the privacy of Airman Navajas’ family be respected at this time.”

Navajas, who was in the 505th Communications Squadron, was found at the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, Hurlburt said.

The 505th Command and Control Wing is a tenant unit at Hurlburt, which the base said is “responsible for advancing, integrating and standardizing training, tactics and testing for operational-level command of air, space and cyber power in the joint and coalition environment.”

A photograph of Navajas was unavailable.
