Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston has identified the soldier who was found dead on-base late Monday evening.
Army Sgt. Cody L. Bowman, 25, who was assigned to the Brooke Army Medical Center’s Warrior Transition Battalion at the base, was found dead in his vehicle near Salado Creek Park at about 10 p.m. Monday. The 502nd Air Base Wing at the base said in a release Wednesday evening that a suspicious device found next to him was an inert grenade training simulator.
The area was then locked down until security forces and explosive ordnance disposal teams confirmed the device was inert. The lockdown was lifted at about 11:30 p.m. that evening.
The release said Bowman’s death is still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
The Warrior Transition Battalion at Brooke Army Medical Center provides personalized support for wounded, ill or injured soldiers, who require at least six months of rehabilitative care and complex treatment, as they return to the force or transition to civilian life. Warrior transition battalions also provide support to the soldiers’ families.
The 502nd said on Tuesday that Bowman had been assigned to Fort Sam Houston as a wounded warrior.
