A lab at Osan Air Base, South Korea, was one of multiple locations that was accidentally sent live samples of anthrax by a Defense Department laboratory.

Air Force emergency personnel destroyed the package, and 22 people, who may have been exposed during a "training event," have been examined and provided with antibiotics and, in some cases, vaccinations, the base announced Wednesday.

A laboratory at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah accidentally sent the anthrax through a commercial delivery service, the Pentagon said Wednesday, as well as the U.S. Forces Korea Portal and Integrated Threat Recognition Program at Osan.

"There is no known risk to the general public and no personnel have shown any signs of possible exposure," Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren said in a statement. "The sample was destroyed in accordance with appropriate protocols."

The 51st Fighter Wing at Osan said the sample was located in a self-contained emergency facility on base.

The mistake is still under investigation, according to the Defense Department.
