The Air Force has released the names of 13,269 airmen selected for promotion to staff sergeant.

Of the 39,260 airmen considered for promotion, 33.8 percent were selected to advance, compared with last year's selection rate of 25.6 percent.

The average overall score for airmen selected to advance was 399.52, compared with an average score of 366.81 for those airmen who were not promoted.

The biggest differences between selectees and non-selectees were the average scores on the specialty knowledge tests and promotion fitness examinations. Those airmen who were promoted score an average of 65.95 on the SKT and 63.564 on the PFE, while those airmen not selected to advance had average scores of 54.49 on the SKT and 53.67 on the PFE.

The career fields with the highest cutoff scores – indicating the fiercest competition – include 3S3X3, manpower; 3S2X1, education and training; 3N1X1, regional band; 4R0X1B, diagnostic imaging; and 1B4X1, cyberspace defense operations.

The career field with the lowest cutoff scores include 2A5X4C, aerospace maintenance; 2A3X8B, remotely piloted aircraft maintenance; 2A3X3L and 2A3X3M, tactical aircraft maintenance; and 2A8X1F, mobility air forces integrated communication/navigation/mission systems specializing in tankers.

This is the first staff sergeant promotion cycle to incorporate the most recent changes to the Weighted Airman Promotion System.

Among the changes for this cycle, airmen's enlisted performance reports are worth a maximum of 250 points, up from 135 points. Airmen must also score at least 40 out of 100 on specialty knowledge tests and promotion fitness examinations, and their combined score must be at least 90.

Before the changes to the promotion system, almost all enlisted airmen received "Firewall 5s" on their EPRs, rendering the evaluations useless in determining who the top performers are. Now only a certain percentage of eligible airmen are highly recommended for promotion.

Those airmen selected to advance to staff sergeant will be promoted according to their promotion sequence number, according to the Air Force Personnel Center. Sequence or line numbers are updated on or about the 15th of each month on the enlisted promotion line numbers page.
