A civilian working for the Defense Logistics Agency was killed in an indirect fire attack Monday on Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, according to the Defense Department.

Krissie Davis, 54, was supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the Defense Department announced on Tuesday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones," said Army Col. Brian Tribus, a spokesman for the U.S. mission in Afghanistan.

Another civilian was wounded in Monday's attack, Tribus said in an email.

Davis left for Afghanistan on April 25 as an environmental protection specialist, a job that involves disposing of hazardous waste, according to the DLA public affairs office in Battle Creek, Michigan.

This was her second deployment. In 2010, she served in Kuwait and Kyrgyzstan.

Davis had more than 30 years of federal service. She served as a civilian with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Department of the Army before joining the DLA in April 1992.

"We'll always remember Krissie for her friendly personality and her infectious smile," said Gail Haas, one of Davis' co-workers at the DLA. "If you needed to talk to someone about something or had a question, Krissie was there for you, willing to give you her ideas and her experiences along with a laugh."

Davis left an indelible impression on those she worked with, Haas said

"Krissie knew no strangers," she said. "When she smiled at you with that big grin, you just had to smile back. Krissie's strong Southern drawl in the way she said: 'Hey, ya'll,' her conversations; laughter and her friendship will live deep in our memories for a long, long time."
