Majors and major-selects interested in moving into senior management positions have a development opportunity in the upcoming Defense Department Executive Leadership Development Program.

Nominations are due March 16 for the 10-month program, which begins with orientation in August, the Air Force Personnel Center said in a release Monday.

The program's aim is to promote greater understanding of the Defense Department mission and culture, and provide hands-on leadership training that parallels selected military training to both civilian and military participants, according to a separate release.

The Air Force selection board will convene in April to choose three primary nominees and three alternates to represent the Air Force at the Defense Department's selection board. The release did not say how many majors will ultimately be chosen.

Majors and major-selects who are interested in an Executive Leadership Development Program must submit their nominations by March 16.

To take part in the program, officers must be highly motivated and have demonstrated leadership ability, the Air Force Personnel Center said in a release Monday. They also must be committed to public service and integrity and be interested in moving into senior management positions.

To be eligible for the program, majors and major-selects must:

  • Have completed Squadron Officer School and intermediate developmental education, either in-residence or by correspondence., and
  • Have successfully commanded a flight or higher-level organization.

The release said candidates must be able to assume responsibility for their own learning, be able to conceptualize and analyze problems effectively, and be open to a unique training style.

Majors who are accepted into the program will spend 75 days in training, briefings and field trips in both the U.S. and overseas, but otherwise will remain in their current assignments. Because participants will not undergo a permanent change-of-station move, they will not take on an additional active-duty service commitment.

The selection board will convene in April to choose three primary nominees and three alternates to represent the Air Force at the Defense Department's selection board. The release did not say how many majors will ultimately be chosen.

Participants will take part in a program orientation in August, and the first training event will be held in October.

Participants' home units will be responsible for travel and per diem costs. Applicants must include a recommendation statement from the first colonel with a valid senior rater identifier or an equivalent in their chain of command that acknowledges they know they will take on that expense.
