Air Force Lt. Gen. John Dolan has been nominated to become the next director of operations for the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced Friday.
If confirmed, Dolan would assist the Joint Chiefs of Staff and its chairman, Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford. He would take over from the current director of operations, Air Force Lt. Gen. Tod Wolters, who earlier this month was nominated to pin on his fourth star and become the new commander of U.S. Air Forces Europe-U.S. Air Forces Africa.
Dolan is currently serving as the commander of U.S. Forces Japan, as well as leading the 5th Air Force, Pacific Air Forces and Yokota Air Base in Japan.
Carter also announced several other nominations and promotions Friday:
Maj. Gen. Thomas Bergeson is nominated to serve as the deputy commander for United Nations Command Korea, deputy commander for U.S. Forces Korea, leader of the Air Component Command for the U.S. Combined Forces Command with the Republic of Korea, and the commander of the 7th Air Force at Osan Air Base, South Korea.
If confirmed, Bergeson would receive a promotion to lieutenant general. He is currently serving as the director for the Legislative Liaison of the Secretary of the Air Force.
Maj. Gen. Richard Clark is nominated for promotion to lieutenant general and for assignment as the commander of the 3rd Air Force, U.S. Air Forces in Europe, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.
He is currently serving as the commander of the 8th Air Force for Air Force Global Strike Command at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, as well as serving as the joint functional component commander for Global Strike for U.S. Strategic Command, which is headquartered at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.
Brig. Gen. Thomas Geary has been nominated for a promotion to major general. He is serving as the director of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, strategy, plans, policy and force development, for the deputy chief of staff for ISR at the Pentagon.
