An airman from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, has been was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of a fellow airman, officials said.

Airman 1st Class Dominic Sacco is also charged with unlawful use of a weapon, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office in Missouri. Sacco is being lodged in the county jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Senior Airman John Bottom, of the 509th Security Forces Squadron, was shot May 9 at an off-base residence in Warrensburg, Missouri, The Associated Press reported. Bottom was taken to a Kansas City hospital, where he died.

Sacco, who is with the same security forces squadron, is accused of firing a handgun and critically wounding Bottom, according to a May 11 news release from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. It is believed that Sacco and Bottom knew each other, the news release says.

Two other airmen from Whiteman were at the scene when the shooting took place, a May 12 base news release says.

The airmen have not yet been identified, a spokesman for Whiteman told Air Force Times on Wednesday. The spokesman did not know if they will face any charges in connection with the shooting.
