Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh will head to Texas A&M University after his retirement to be the next dean of the Bush School of Government and Public Service.

Texas A&M announced Thursday that Welsh will start at the Bush School on Aug. 15. Welsh will retire from the Air Force July 1 after 40 years of service.

Welsh will succeed Ambassador Ryan Crocker as the school's dean.

"I could not be more pleased with, or thankful for, today's announcement that Gen. Mark Welsh will succeed Ryan Crocker as dean of the Bush School," former President George H.W. Bush, the school's namesake, said in a release. "Like Ryan, Gen. Welsh has demonstrated uncommon leadership and an unwavering commitment to service throughout his distinguished career. I salute our wonderful partners at Texas A&M for making the absolute best decision for our students and faculty."

Welsh was born in San Antonio, Texas, and said in the release that he's glad to be coming home to Texas.

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates also served as the interim dean of the Bush School from 1999 to 2001, before he became president of Texas A&M.
