Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state will get a new elementary school under a newly announced grant, the Defense Department said Thursday, while another school at Travis Air Force Base in California will be renovated and expanded.
Evergreen Elementary School at Lewis-McChord is overcrowded and needs repair work, which earned it a spot on the deputy secretary of defense’s “Public Schools on Military Installations Priority List,” the Pentagon said in a news release.
More than $40 million in federal grants are going to construct a new building, with $10 million in nonfederal matching funds, the announcement said.
According to the Pentagon, the school serves more than 761 “military connected students,” including 156 special education students, from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Meanwhile, Scandia Elementary School at Travis is going to be expanded and repaired to address overcrowding. The school also landed on the priority list and the grant will provide $13.7 million, being matched by $3.4 million in nonfederal funding.
The school serves more than 500 students between kindergarten and sixth grade, the Pentagon said.
The funding is part of the DoD’s Public Schools on Military Installations Program, and is provided by the Office of Economic Adjustment.
