Amazon announced Friday that its streaming Prime Video service is now available to U.S. troops overseas in 24 locations across Japan, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Turkey, Romania and Djibouti.
"That means military members and their families who reside within U.S. military bases abroad and who are Prime members have unlimited access to thousands of movies and TV episodes available in the U.S. Prime Video catalog," the company wrote in a blog post.
"Military members and their families can just go to the Amazon Video app for TVs, connected devices and mobile devices," or directly on Amazon's website.
Competing with streaming providers Netflix and Hulu, Prime Video is included free with all Amazon Prime subscriptions in the U.S. But digital distribution typically is blocked in most foreign locations, making availability to troops stationed overseas problematic.
Amazon began unblocking video streaming to a handful of military locations starting in 2014 and has been expanding that offering since. The online mega-retailer — and growing digital delivery giant — says work remains underway to continue expanding availability to more overseas locations.
Meanwhile, Amazon will begin offering up its own stable of original programming through the overseas Armed Forces Network.
Shows such as "Transparent," "Bosch," "Alpha House" and the alternative history thriller "The Man in the High Castle" will begin airing weekly starting Monday.
