1814: Napoleon abdicated his imperial throne unconditionally and was exiled to the Ilse of Elba. Guess we won't have to worry about him anymore, will we?

1863: Lieutenant General James Longstreet, detached from the Army of Northern Virginia, laid siege to Maj. Gen. John Peck and his garrison in Suffolk, Virginia. The Yanks held on until May 4 when Longstreet lifted the siege and headed north to deliver supplies and forage to General Robert E. Lee, mopping up at Chancellorsville.

1865: Confederate forces evacuated Mobile, Alabama. In Washington President Abraham Lincoln called for a spirit of generous conciliation in the postwar Reconstruction to come.

1942: The Distinguished Service Medal was authorized for members of the U.S. Merchant Marine.

2014: The Syrian army killed 57 civilians in Daraa Governorate.
