LAS VEGAS — A jury in Las Vegas will begin deliberating the fate of a Nevada ex-convict accused of plotting with his girlfriend to kill her husband, a U.S. Air Force service member and Iraq War veteran from Guam.

Michael Rodriguez could face the death penalty if he's found guilty of murder and conspiracy in the December 2010 shooting death of Staff Sgt. Nathan Paet.

Prosecutors told the jury Thursday that Paet's wife, Michelle Paet, planned with Rodriguez to get rid of her husband and collect some $650,000 in life insurance so they could be together.

They say Michelle Paet alerted Rodriguez by text message when her husband was leaving the house.

Defense attorneys say Rodriguez didn't intend to kill Paet.

Michelle Paet is scheduled for trial later this month.
