Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York has called for an increased role for the National Guard to retrofit facilities for in-patient care and for involvement from the Army Corps of Engineers to build additional hospital facilities in his state's response to the spread of COVID-19.
National Guard components in California, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, New York, Maryland Rhode Island and Washington have been activated to assist in combating the spread of COVID-19. The units are supporting logistics, communications and planning operations alongside state officials.
Puerto Rico has become the latest state or territory to declare a state of emergency and activate its National Guard in response to the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak. Currently, there are no confirmed cases on the island.
Governors in Washington, California, New York, Florida, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut have all issued emergency proclamations given increases in COVID-19. These declarations allow state governments additional resources, including the ability to swiftly implement a National Guard response.
The National Guard will establish a containment area to combat the spread of novel coronavirus, COVID-19, within one mile of the suspected center of the outbreak in New Rochelle, New York.
