A seven-member Air Force panel began deliberations late Tuesday afternoon in the court-martial of Airman 1st Class Isaiah Edwards, who is charged with killing his roommate while they were deployed to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam last year, the Shreveport Times reported.

Airman 1st Class Bradley Hale was stabbed to death last March 27 in the room he shared with Edwards at Andersen. Both airmen were electronic warfare journeymen assigned to the 2nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron out of Barksdale Air Force Base.

Edwards, who took the stand in his own defense, said he and Hale began fighting in their room at Andersen, the newspaper reported. Edwards testified that the fight escalated and when Hale grabbed Edwards' knife, Edwards took it from him and stabbed him in the neck three times in self-defense.

On Tuesday, the prosecution called two airmen to the stand who testified that they found Edwards to be an “untruthful” person, the newspaper reported. Also, Hale’s mother, paternal aunt and former employer all testified that the airman was a “peaceful” individual.

The Air Force panel heard two hours of closing arguments Tuesday afternoon, the newspaper reported.

The prosecution argued that Edwards’ testimony about the incident “does not add up," according to the Times.

In its closing arguments, the defense argued that Edwards was in shock after the unexpected encounter, and it played a recording of Edward’s 911 call in which he said, “I had to kill my roommate.”

In addition to the charge of unpremeditated murder, the airmen on the panel can also consider lesser charges of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault.
