An airman from Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, drowned Saturday while free-diving, the base said announced in a statement.
Airman 1st Class Christopher O'Brien, 25, died near Ginnie Springs, Florida, a popular outdoor spot about 100 miles southwest of the base.
Authorities believe the death was an accident and do not suspect foul play. O'Brien was off duty at the time, a base spokesman said.
"It is a great loss to us all when we lose a member of our Air Force family. Team Moody and I extend our deepest condolences and prayers to family and friends during this difficult time," said Col. Thomas Kunkel, the 23rd Wing commander.
O'Brien was assigned to the 38th Rescue Squadron at Moody as a pararescue apprentice, according to Air Force personnel records. He joined the service in February 2010, and was decorated with the Air Medal.
A memorial service is planned at Moody for Friday, June 10 at 11 am.
