Recent audits found that about 1,100 airmen at Spangdahlem had been overpaid an average of $1,212.41 due to a discrepancy on forms for personnel in Germany, McGarry said.

The biggest overpayment, $29,700, went to an airman at Spangdahlem, Stars and Stripes first reported July 17.

The amount airmen were overpaid depends on how long they have been stationed in Germany, McGarry said.

"Some members have been here for quite some time," he said. "For members like that gentleman, they've been on station — I believe as far back as 2008 — and have been here the whole time being overpaid that much."

At Ramstein Air Base, Germany, 189 airmen were overpaid a total of $590,276.44, said Juan R. Meléndez, Jr., a spokesman for the 86th Airlift Wing. The most an airman was overpaid was $26,317.43 and the least was $3.89.

Separately, 20 Ramstein airmen were underpaid and have since been reimbursed. Meléndez said in an email to Air Force Times. The most an airman was underpaid was $7,451.97.

The request for a "group remission package" is expected to take a couple of months, McGarry told Air Force Times on Monday.

"The outcome is anticipated to be favorable, at this point," he said.

"We're in the process of advising our folks that are affected that: A. We need you to adjust the forms so you can stop being overpaid; B. No debts are going to be collected at this time, no plans to do so; C. We're seeking a group remission package for all debts," McGarry said.
