An archaeological dig in Sicily has uncovered traces of a lost World War II American heavy bomber shot down in 1943, and possible human remains that could lead to identification of five airmen whose bodies were never recovered.
Nov. 9 and 10 will be the first time in 78 years that Tomb Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery will allow visitors to enter the chains surrounding the Tomb, allowing the public to lay flowers.
In 1944, Allied forces began liberating the Netherlands from Nazi occupation. Among these soldiers were black GIs whose role in the liberation had largely been overlooked in historical accounts. Now, the Black Liberators Project seeks to highlight the service and sacrifice of these soldiers, including the 172 buried in Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten.
