Creech Air Force Base, Nevada, has lost another member of its family.
Tech. Sgt. Mike Johannsen, 29, was killed in on April 19 when his car was hit head-on by a driver going the wrong way, according the Nevada Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash along with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations are investigating the crash.
Johannsen was a drone sensor operator, who had been serving served with the 91st Attack Squadron at Creech since January 2013, according to Air Force Reserve Command.
"Mike was an outstanding Airman and role-model who epitomized our core values of integrity, service and excellence," Lt. Col. Adam Blood, commander of the 91st Attack Squadron, said in a statement. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family as we share in their grief during this difficult time."
A combat veteran, Johannsen joined the Air Force straight out of high school and spent more than 10 years on active duty and in the Air Force Reserve.
"We are hurting after this tragic loss of life," Col. Ross R. Anderson, 926th Wing commander, said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with TSgt Johannsen's family, friends and squadron teammates right now."
Johannsen's death comes little more than two weeks after the body of another sensor operator was found off base. Master Sgt. Travis Parkhurst was found on April 4 after he went missing the day before.
Parkhurst had served with the 432nd Wing at Creech for four years. The Clark County Coroner's Office has not yet determined the cause of his death.
"Travis was a loving and devoted father of nine, including adopted and foster children," his family said in a statement to Air Force Times. "He has also been an advocate in the courts fighting for child medical rights."
