New in 2017: New administration will bring a new SECAF

The Air Force is going to get a new secretary in 2017 as part of the new Trump administration, but who that might be is anyone's guess.

Current Secretary Deborah Lee James, who has been the service's top civilian for the past three years, said in a television interview shortly after the election that she will be tendering her resignation, as expected. This will clear the way for Trump to nominate his own secretary, as typically happens after a new president is elected.

However, no names have so far surfaced as possible candidates, and it remains to be seen who Trump and his pick for secretary of defense, retired Marine Gen. Jim Mattis, will choose to run the service.

But there will be some continuity at the top of the Air Force. Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein was approved earlier this year, and will stay on as the service's top uniformed officer.
