Staff Sgt. Michael Bean of the 134th Air Refueling Wing saved a man from a house fire in Tennessee.

Bean also works as a patrol lieutenant for the Johnson City Police Department, where he received a call about a disabled man in a house fire, according to a Defense Department release on Friday.

"Approximately 8:30 or so at night, we received a call from 911, that there was a male subject inside of a residence who happened to be disabled and the residence was on fire. Fortunately, I was pretty close, about a minute and a half or so out," said Bean in the release.

When Bean arrived on scene, there was a woman in the driveway who said a man was inside and she was unable to get to him.

Bean went inside but was unable to locate the man at first. He exited the home and then re-entered.

"On our way out we noticed that there were several oxygen tanks that were inside the doorway there. We started throwing those out of the doorway, pretty much took our jackets off, and put ’em around our faces, and ran back in," Bean said.

Bean and a fellow officer were able to locate the man and carry him out to safety.

Bean talked about his training in the Air Force and how it helped prepare him for the situation.

"The Air Force teaches you a sense of service and commitment, attention to detail," he said.
