Seymour Johnson chosen to host Air Force tanker fleet

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Air Force says Seymour Johnson Air Force base in eastern North Carolina has been selected to host a new fleet of aerial tankers beginning in 2019.

The Air Force Reserve Command reported on its website Thursday that Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James announced the base near Goldsboro as the preferred host for the reserve-led KC-46As. The aircraft are expected to begin arriving in 2019.

Jennifer Miller, the Air Force deputy assistant secretary for installations, said the selection of Seymour Johnson was based in part on operational analysis, results of site surveys and cost.

Gov. Pat McCrory said the selection of Seymour Johnson is a reflection of North Carolina's commitment to support and protect the operational capability of the U.S. military.
