Brig. Gen. Michele Edmondson has been selected to become the next commandant of cadets for the Air Force Academy.

In a Thursday release, the academy said Edmondson will take command of the 4,000-member cadet wing this summer. She will succeed Brig. Gen. Kristin Goodwin.

She will also oversee more than 200 airmen and civilian personnel, and be responsible for developing the character and leadership skills of cadets, military training, supervising cadet life activities, and providing facility and logistical support, the release said.

Edmondson, who received her first star in August, is now serving at the White House, directing space policy for the National Security Council. She has a background in space operations and acquisitions, and holds master’s degrees in strategic studies, national security affairs and organizational management. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering.

Edmondson previously commanded the 81st Training Wing at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi.

The academy also announced Nathan Pine, who is now director of intercollegiate athletics at the College of the Holy Cross, has been selected to be the academy’s new athletic director. He will arrive in January, and will replace Jim Knowlton, who left in April to become the athletic director for the University of California Berkeley.

Goodwin will become director of current operations for Lt. Gen. Mark Kelly, deputy chief of staff, at the Pentagon after she leaves the academy, the release said.
