The fleet of T-6A Texan II trainers at the 12th Operations Group at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph in Texas remain grounded, two days after one of the aircraft crashed.

In a release Wednesday evening, the 12th Flying Training Wing said the base’s other training aircraft, the T-38C Talon and the T-1A Jayhawk, resumed flying at about noon on Wednesday.

Col. Mark Robinson, commander of the 12th Wing, grounded all three types of the wing’s aircraft immediately after the Texan crashed near Rolling Oaks Mall in San Antonio at about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Both pilots — Lt. Col. Lee Glenn, an active Guard and Reserve T-6 instructor pilot from the 559th Flying Training Squadron, assigned to the 340th Flying Training Group at Randolph, and 1st Lt. Nicholas Donato, a pilot in the 559th on temporary duty to Randolph for instructor training — safely ejected.

Glenn and Donato were evaluated for minor injuries at the medical clinic at Randolph and released that evening. No civilians were injured or killed in the crash.

“It appears the aircraft experienced engine failure on final approach at low altitude, configured for landing before our airmen ejected,” Robinson said in the release. “The interim safety board will be looking at all aspects of the aircraft, to include the engine components, to determine the cause of the crash.”

Robinson said an interim safety board has been set up to preserve evidence until a formal safety board is created later this week.

“It’s important that we give the safety board the time and resources needed to complete the difficult task ahead,” Robinson said.
