The Air Force Academy has identified a cadet who died Thursday as Cadet 1st Class Alexandre Quiros, 21.
Quiros, who was assigned to Cadet Squadron 31, was found injured in his dorm room and pronounced dead at the scene at 3:43 p.m. on Thursday, an academy news release says. The Air Force Office of Special Investigations is investigating his death.
The cause of death has not yet been established, the news release says. So far, the academy has not explained the type or extent of Quiros' injuries or who found him.
The Colorado Springs Gazette is reporting that there are no indications of foul play or that anyone else was in his room when Quiros was injured, citing unnamed sources familiar with the investigation. Those sources also told the newspaper that Quiros had his wisdom teeth removed earlier Thursday in the academy clinic.
Quiros, a senior majoring an astronautical engineering, had an outstanding academic record, according to the academy news release. Several times, he made the Dean's List and Commandant's List, which require grade point and military performance averages of 3.0 or higher, respectively.
"Our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of Cadet Quiros," Air Force Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson said in the news release. "Yesterday, we lost a member of our Air Force Academy family, and it's a loss felt across our entire institution. Right now, our focus is on providing all possible support to the friends and loved ones of our fallen airman."
