DAYTON, Ohio — The Air Force on Friday confirmed that the Thunderbirds were conducting a single-ship familiarization flight when an F-16D Fighting Falcon was involved in a mishap.

The incident happened about 12:20 p.m. Friday at the Dayton International Airport in Ohio.

The plane sustained damage and the pilot and his passenger, a tactical aircraft maintainer, were taken to a local hospital. They are currently in good condition, according to the Air Force.

"Our first priority is taking care of our Thunderbird teammates and ensuring future safety," said Lt. Col. Jason Heard, Thunderbirds commander/leader.

The incident is under investigation. The Thunderbirds have not determined if the team's performance this weekend in the Dayton Air Show will go on as planned, according to the Air Force.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base dispatched a crash team and heavy rescue crew after the crash, according to Sgt. Penelope Reed of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in Dayton. Reed added that the jet was at the end of a runway and on its top.
