Man who went AWOL 45 years ago home after 30-day sentence

OCALA, Fla. — A Florida man who went AWOL from the U.S. Air Force and spent 45 years on the lam has returned home after serving a 30-day sentence.

The Ocala Star-Banner reports that 75-year-old Linley Lemburg was arrested last month. He had been living under an alias, William Michael Robertson, and was located by Marion County Sheriff's officials after the military sought their help. It's unclear what led authorities to Lemburg. He went missing in 1972.

Sheriff's authorities confirmed Lemburg's identity by comparing his fingerprints to those taken when he was enlisted. Military officials took him to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa. He pleaded guilty to desertion.

Air Force officials said a military judge sentenced him to dishonorable discharge, reduction of rank and 15 years confinement. His confinement was capped at 30 days, with 21 days credited for time served.
