The Air Force wants to expand its test range in rural Utah so F-35 pilots have more room to train.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Air Force officials told residents at a community meeting this week that no missiles or bombs would be dropped in the extra 700,000 acres. But pilots would be able to fire at targets within the existing boundaries of the Utah Test and Training Range.

A staffer for Sen. Orrin Hatch said he wants Congress to approve the land transfer to facilitate the expansion.

The expansion would prohibit development on the land, which is west of Salt Lake City. Ranchers and hunters who use the land would still have access, Robinson said.

Residents didn't voice opposition to the plan, but expressed concern about road access.
