Officers who hope to take part in a science and technology research fellowship program sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, must submit their nomination package by March 16.

The DARPA Service Chiefs Fellows Program is intended to immerse outstanding military officers and federal civilian employees into "imaginative and innovative, fast-paced science and technology research," DARPA's website said.

As part of the three-month program, which will take place in fiscal 2016, participants from each branch of the military learn more about a specific technological area that is of interest to them and their service. They could possibly help develop a future DARPA technology, the agency said.

To be eligible, nominees must either be majors or lieutenant colonels, or have been selected for promotion to those ranks. They also must have at least a secret security clearance and be considered highly competitive for promotion to the next grade, be highly motivated, have demonstrated outstanding leadership in operational positions, and have the clear potential to move into senior operational leadership positions.

Participants will continue to serve as liaisons between DARPA and their service after finishing the program. DARPA will pay for temporary duty travel, lodging and per diem.
