The senior enlisted leader for U.S. European Command has been fired and plans to retire.

Gen. Philip Breedlove, EUCOM commander, relieved Chief Master Sergeant Craig Adams of his position on Sept. 15 "due to a loss of faith and confidence in his ability to perform his duties," said Air Force Lt. Col. David Westover, a spokesman for EUCOM. Westover did not include any information about why Breedlove decided to remove Adams.

Before losing his job, Adams was one of the senior enlisted advisers assigned to the military's top four-star commands who were eligible to become the next senior enlisted adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford.

Breedlove has notified the senior leadership team and held an all-hands call with the EUCOM enlisted force about his decision to dismiss Adams, Westover said in an email to Air Force Times. Adams has been reassigned to Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

Adams' attorney, Steve Bruce, told Air Force Times that his client will retire at his current rank. Bruce also said that Adams declined to elaborate on why he is no longer EUCOM's senior enlisted leader.

"I am honored to have served my country for 28 years in the United States Air Force," Adams said in a statement that Bruce provided to Air Force Times. "Without question, I would never have chosen another career. These years of service have been the most rewarding times for me personally and professionally.

"The men and women I have served with represent the very best our nation has to offer and I am confident that they will continue to serve our country in the very best traditions of the Air Force and the United States military."
