The commander of the "boneyard" at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., has been fired.

Col. Margaret Romero has been relieved of command of the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, according to a brief statement from Davis-Monthan. The group is commonly known as the "boneyard" because it is home to nearly 4,000 aircraft in storage.

Brig. Gen. Carl Buhler, commander of the Ogden Air Logistics Complex in Utah, replaced Romero on Monday "due to a loss of confidence in Romero's ability to effectively lead the organization," the statement says.

Col. Matthew Powell of the Ogden Air Logistics Complex has been appointed commander of the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, the statement says.

The statement did not explain why Buhler lost confidence in Romero's ability to lead. She assumed command of the boneyard on June 13.

The Arizona Daily Star first reported Tuesday that Romero had been relieved of command.
