Two members assigned to Kadena Air Base, Japan, died Saturday in separate incidents.

An airman assigned to the base died during a diving accident approximately 30 miles north of the base, according to a base release.

The airman was airlifted to Nakagami Hospital, about five miles east of the base, where he was pronounced dead.

A contractor also assigned to the base was found dead in an off-base hotel room early Saturday morning, a second release said. The death is under investigation.

The identity of both members is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Five deaths have occurred near Kadena in the past two weeks — in addition to the two incidents over the weekend, three airmen from Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, who were temporarily assigned to Kadena died Oct. 5 after being swept out to sea by high waves from Typhoon Phanfone. Separate memorials were held over the weekend for Senior Master Sgt. James Swartz, an aerospace propulsion superintendent with the Georgia Air National Guard's 116th Air Control Wing, Staff Sgt. Joshua Schoenhoff, an instrument and flight control systems specialist with the 461st Air Control Wing, and Master Sgt. Daniel Paschal, an aerospace propulsion craftsman with the 116th ACW.
