. Officials at Columbus Air Force Base say a pilot instructor has died in a plane crash on Sunday near Abilene Regional Airport in Texas.

According to a news release from Columbus Air Force Base, the pilot was Air Force Maj. Richard W. "Tracer" Schafer III, age 35. Schafer's brother, 28-year-old Matthew Schafer of Abilene, also died in the crash.

Local authorities say 31-year-old Victoria Schafer and 2-year-old Wyatt Schafer survived the crash of the single engine plane.

Richard Schafer was flying his private aircraft, licensed in Mississippi, while on vacation with his family in Texas, according to the statement from CAFB.

Details of the crash have not been released. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
