Men who stole metals from Hill Air Force Base get probation

SALT LAKE CITY — Two men convicted of stealing thousands of pounds of metals from Hill Air Force Base have avoided jail time.

The Standard-Examiner of Ogden reported Saturday that Christopher Workman and Austin Moon each were sentenced to two years federal probation.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says both received credit for time served while their cases were adjudicated.

Workman and Moon must each pay a $100 fine and restitution of $78,400 and $11,900 restitution, respectively.

According to court records, they pleaded guilty to felony theft of government property for pilfering copper, aluminum and brass from storage areas on base.

Prosecutors say they stole more than 6,500 pounds of metals over a series of thefts in 2009 and 2010.

The stolen metals were sold to recyclers in Davis and Salt Lake counties.
