President Obama has nominated a three-star general to take command of Pacific Air Forces.

Lt. Gen. Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle currently serves as the Air Force’s deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and requirements. He has been selected to receive a fourth star and replace retiring Gen. Gary North, according to a Jan. 20 memo from the Air Staff.

Lt. Gen. Stephen Mueller, now the vice commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe, has been chosen to be the new Inspector General of the Air Force. Mueller would replace retiring Lt. Gen. Marc Rogers.

Both appointments require Senate confirmation.

Carlisle and Mueller both graduated from the Air Force Academy in the late 1970s and have more than 3,000 flying hours apiece.

In his current role, Carlisle “is responsible to the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff for formulating policy supporting air, space, irregular warfare, counterproliferation, homeland security, weather and cyber operations,” according to his official Air Force biography.

Mueller serves as second in command for USAFE, which has an area of responsibility that includes more than 50 countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
