Honor Guard members punished for ‘spice’ use

A dozen members of the Air Force Honor Guard have been punished for using the marijuana-like drug “spice.”

The airmen were among 13 investigated for using and possessing spice, a product that when smoked mimics marijuana’s high.

Twelve received nonjudicial punishments under Article 15 last month, said 11th Wing spokesman Eric Sharman. Sharman declined to detail the specifics of those punishments, citing privacy concerns. One airman was cleared.

The service banned spice last year. The Air Force Honor Guard, the service’s official ceremonial unit, has about 215 members.

The Air Force banned spice last year, and the Drug Enforcement Administration implemented a temporary ban earlier this month lasting at least a year on five chemicals used to make spice.
