Second annual Warrior Games set for May 2011

The second annual Warrior Games is set for May 2011 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

More than 200 service members — most of whom have suffered combat-related injures — are expected to turn out for the games scheduled for May 16-21.

The games will be similar to the inaugural event held this past May, also in Colorado Springs, which included track and field events, swimming and volleyball.

Troops interested in competing in the games can get information through their commands.

“When the focus is on ability rather than disability, we see that physical fitness and sports can have a healing affect on the mind, body and soul,” Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs, said Monday at the Pentagon.

Athletes from the Warrior Games can go on to compete in the Paralympics, the Olympics-style games for disabled athletes. At the same time, the competition is considered a rehabilitative tool for troops with severe combat-related injuries.
