Airman fatally shot; soldier charged

CALIFORNIA CITY, Calif. — Police say an Air Force staff sergeant was shot three times in the back and once in his upper right arm when he was killed, allegedly by a fellow serviceman, in California City.

California City Police Chief Steve Colerick told The Bakersfield Californian on Wednesday that investigators have recovered five shell casings from in front of Brian Carragher's home. He was shot there on Saturday night and died at an Antelope Valley hospital.

Timothy Aaron Atkins, whom police say had just returned from his second Army tour of duty in Iraq, has been charged in 29-year-old Carragher's slaying. He has not yet entered a plea.

Colerick says the 26-year-old Atkins went to Carragher's home to confront his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, who were renting a room from Carragher. Carragher reportedly went outside to tell Atkins to leave and was shot.
