WASHINGTON — The military said fighter jets escorted a small biplane out of protected airspace above Chicago on Thursday during President Obama’s visit there.

North American Aerospace Defense Command said the F-22 fighters were patrolling the airspace and intercepted the plane shortly before noon. There was no threat to the president, the military said.

Obama was in Chicago for a birthday celebration Wednesday, and a round of campaign fundraisers and a visit to a Ford Motor Co. plant Thursday. Temporary airspace restrictions were in place due to his visit.
