Sheppard airman dies while jogging

A memorial service took place Tuesday for a 21-year-old airman who died after collapsing during a jog at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.

Senior Airman Troy Edwards collapsed as he ran on a base track at about 6 a.m. on Aug. 18. Nearby medical personnel rendered first aid before Edwards was taken to a hospital in nearby Wichita Falls, Texas, where he died two days later.

Edwards was at Sheppard on a temporary duty assignment for training. He served as a field distribution operator with the 99th Logistics Readiness Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

The temperature was about 75 degrees at the time of his collapse, according to weatherunderground.com. The investigation is ongoing and initial results could take weeks, Sheppard spokeswoman Debi Smith said.
