Air Force Week begins in New York

A series of Air Force events kicked off on Tuesday with an air demonstration in New York City

Thunderbirds jets conducted a six-plane flyover of the aircraft carrier Intrepid on Tuesday morning to open Air Force Week. Two F-16s from the Thunderbirds made practice flights the day before.

A New York National Guard HH-60 Pave Hawk chopper will land on Intrepid at 11 a.m. Wednesday and will stay there until 4 p.m.

New York’s Air Force Week is set to end Sunday. Air Force Weeks are held in a different city several times a year to celebrate the service. Another one is planned at Cocoa Beach, Fla., in October.

Other events planned this week include:

•Wednesday: A C-17 Globemaster III wide-bodied airlifter from the 305th Air Mobility Wing at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., will fly over MCU Park in Brooklyn during a minor-league baseball game.

•Thursday: A B-52 Stratofortress bomber aircraft from the 5th Bomb Wing, Minot Air Force Base, N.D. will fly over Citi Field during a New York Mets game. The Air Force drill team, the Air National Guard Band of the Northeast and hometown heroes from New York will be present.

•Saturday: A C-17 from the 305th Air Mobility Wing will fly over a match at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. Along with an enlistment ceremony for new recruits, and a singer from the Air Force will sing the national anthem. An Air Force color guard will present the colors.
