Hill to restrict use of contaminated area

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — Hill Air Force Base officials say no more cleanup is needed at a contaminated site in part of the base's family housing area.

The soil contaminated with potentially hazardous PCBs was discovered in 2007 in a spot called Upper Area F.

Since then, base officials say, more than 2,200 cubic yards of polluted dirt have been excavated and taken away. Clean soil and new landscaping have been put in its place.

Military officials are proposing a new plan for the property that includes restrictions on how the land can be used in the future. They plan to discuss it at a public meeting Wednesday night at Hill Field Elementary.

Base officials say the pollution likely came from an old storage area where electrical transformers — a common source of PCBs — were stored.
