Air Force retiree and cross-country skier Sean Halsted will represent the U.S. in the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games, which start Friday in Vancouver.
Halsted suffered a spinal cord injury in 1998 when he fell 40 feet out of a helicopter while fast-roping during a search and rescue training exercise.
He took up Nordic skiing after attending a Veterans Administration Winter Sports Clinic in 2001.
About 600 athletes with physical disabilities from more than 40 countries will compete in the Games.
Of the 50 athletes on the U.S. team, five are military veterans: Halsted; Heath Calhoun, alpine skiing, retired Army; Chris Devlin-Young, alpine skiing, retired Coast Guard; Patrick McDonald, wheelchair curling, retired Army; and Andy Soule, cross-country skiing and biathlon, retired Army.
