Donley: Additional C-130s not needed

Don’t count on Air Force leaders calling for increasing the number of C-130 Hercules because of the Army adding 30,000 soldiers this year and next.

“We have sufficient tactical airlift,” Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley told reporters Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

The Air Force has about 425 C-130s and is replacing older E-model aircraft with new C-130Js. According to Air Force numbers, the service looks to buy eight cargo C-130Js in fiscal 2011.

The Air Force is asking for money to buy 15 small cargo planes in 2011, but those are intended as training aircraft to teach foreign military students and fly some short-haul airlift flights. The service is also asking to acquire eight C-27 transports for use by the Air National Guard to support Army units in the field.
