Ky. Guard to build airstrips for Haiti aid

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Members of the Kentucky Air National Guard are scheduled to help open airfields so aid can flow to areas affected by the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti.
Col. Greg Nelson, commander of the 123rd Airlift Wing, says the departures Friday will make the Kentucky Air Guard the first in the nation to bring humanitarian relief to the earthquake-ravaged country. Three C-130 Hercules air transport planes will leave from the Air National Guard Base in Louisville.
Maj. Gen. Edward W. Tonini, Kentucky’s adjutant general, says about 45 members of the 123rd Contingency Readiness Group are expected to deploy.
Tonini says the planes contain everything needed to open a runway and establish airfield operations in a remote site. The mission calls for the airfields to be set up in the neighboring Dominican Republic.
