Homeland Security to investigate Fort Hood
Posted : Monday Nov 16, 2009 8:38:40 EST
AUGUSTA, Maine — Sen. Susan Collins of Maine says the Senate Homeland Security Committee will open an investigation into the murders at Fort Hood with a public hearing this week.
Collins is ranking Republican on the committee, which is chaired by independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.
The two senators released statements announcing the hearing. Lieberman said the murders should be examined from every angle to make sure nothing like that occurs again. He said the committee will not interfere with Army or FBI criminal investigations.
Collins said that three years ago, the committee started an investigation into the threat of homegrown Islamist terrorism. She said the Fort Hood attack appears to be a further example of that threat.
