GRAND FORKS, N.D. — A new commander has been named for Grand Forks Air Force Base.
Col. Donald Shaffer is to succeed Col. John Michel on Nov. 13.
The Air Force announced in September that Michel was being reassigned to Scott Air Force Base, Ill., as its new executive officer for Air Mobility Command.
Shaffer is vice commander of the 437th Airlift Wing at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1987 and earned his pilot wings at Columbus Air Force Base, Miss., in 1988.
He is a pilot with more than 3,600 hours of experience, twice commanding C-17 airlift operations in Germany during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
