SCOTIA, N.Y. — Members of an upstate New York-based Air National Guard unit are headed to the South Pole.
The 109th Airlift Wing based at the Stratton Air National Guard Base in Schenectady County is taking part in the U.S. military's annual Operation Deep Freeze mission.
Two of the unit's six LC-130 cargo planes supporting the mission departed from the base Wednesday morning. National Guard officials say nearly 400 members of the 109th will either be stationed at the U.S. base at McMurdo Station in Antarctica or be in transit at any given time during the four-month mission.
The 109th is the only unit in the U.S. military to fly aircraft equipped with skis for landing on snow and ice. The unit began its South Pole missions in 1988.
