CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. — A 36-year-old airman is getting the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Action Medal after being wounded by a land mine in Afghanistan.

Tech. Sgt. Michael Williams, from Summerville, receives the awards Thursday at Charleston Air Force Base. The Bronze Star carries a “V,” indicating an act of valor in combat.

In August, Williams and his 12-member explosive disposal team were diffusing a bomb while under fire from Afghan insurgents. In the effort, Williams stepped on a land mine and severely injured both legs.

Air Force officials say that despite his wounds, Williams worked to get his team to safety and report on the blasts. Since he was wounded, Williams has been recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
