Andrews AFB becomes Joint Base Andrews

Joint Base Andrews, Md., earlier this month became the second joint installation in the country, as part of an ongoing consolidation process that began with the military’s 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process.

Andrews Air Force Base and Naval Air Facility Washington have merged to become Joint Base Andrews Naval Facility Washington.

On Oct. 1, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., became fully operational, blending elements of the Air Force, Army and Navy.

A total of 12 joint bases are planned throughout the country.

The other 10 are as follows:

* McChord Air Force Base and Fort Lewis, Wash. (Joint Base Lewis-McChord).

* Bolling Air Force Base and Naval District Washington, D.C. (Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling-Naval Research Laboratory).

* Henderson Hall and Fort Myer, Va. (Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall).

* Fort Richardson and Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska (Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson).

* Hickam Air Force Base and Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam).

* Fort Sam Houston and Randolph Air Force Base, Texas: installation management functions to be centralized at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

* Naval Weapons Station Charleston, S.C.: installation management functions to be relocated to Charleston Air Force Base, S.C.

* Fort Eustis, Va.: installation management functions to be relocated to Langley Air Force Base, Va.

* Fort Story, Va.: installation management functions to be relocated to Commander Naval Mid-Atlantic Region, Naval Station Norfolk, Va.

* Andersen Air Force Base, Guam: installation management functions to be relocated to Commander U.S. Naval Forces Marianas Islands, Guam.
